Installation Method of 24V Starter Solenoid Switch for Mercedes-Benz / DAF / Scania
I. Pre-installation Preparation
Tools and Consumables Preparation
Special tools: Torque wrench (range: 0–100 N·m), socket set (8–19 mm), starter support bracket, special crimping tool for solenoid switch terminals.
Consumables: Original 24V starter solenoid switch parts (must match the engine model of the vehicle), high-temperature resistant insulating electrical tape, anti-loosening threadlocker (compliant with ISO 10993 standard), non-corrosive contact cleaner.
Safety Operation Prerequisites
Disconnect the negative cable of the vehicle's 24V battery and wait for more than 5 minutes to ensure the complete discharge of the capacitor inside the starter.
Secure the engine with a bracket to prevent component damage caused by engine shaking during the installation process.
Clean the oil stains and rust on the starter mounting surface and the connection part of the solenoid switch to ensure flat contact surfaces.
II. General Installation Steps (Applicable to All Three Vehicle Models)
1. Pre-positioning of the Solenoid Switch
Align the drive gear guide sleeve of the new solenoid switch with the starter armature shaft, push it in slowly, and ensure there is no jamming between the guide sleeve and the armature shaft.
Confirm that the mounting bolt holes of the solenoid switch are completely aligned with the holes on the starter housing. Forced alignment is strictly prohibited.
2. Fastening the Mounting Bolts
Install the two mounting bolts and manually screw them in until the threads are fitted to avoid bolt skewing.
Tighten the bolts in a cross tightening sequence with a torque wrench, and the torque parameters must strictly comply with the original factory standards:
Mercedes-Benz: 18–22 N·m
DAF: 20–25 N·m
Scania: 19–23 N·m
A small amount of anti-loosening threadlocker can be applied to the tail of the bolts (only for non-through-hole bolts) to prevent loosening caused by vehicle vibration.
3. Electrical Circuit Connection
Main power cable connection: Connect the heavy cable terminal of the 24V battery positive input to the M terminal (main terminal) of the solenoid switch. Tighten the nut with a torque of 12–15 N·m, and install a flat washer and a spring washer to prevent poor contact.
Control circuit connection: Connect the thin wire terminal controlled by the ignition switch to the S terminal (control terminal) of the solenoid switch. Ensure the terminal is firmly clamped without loosening.
After the circuit connection is completed, wrap the exposed terminal parts with insulating tape to avoid short circuits.
4. Mechanical Linkage Inspection
Manually press the push rod of the solenoid switch to check whether the drive gear extends and retracts smoothly without jamming or abnormal noise.
Confirm that the meshing clearance between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear meets the original factory requirements (clearance value: 1.5–3.0 mm). If the clearance is not up to standard, adjust the thickness of the shim.
