1. Pre‑Installation Preparation
1.1 Safety Operations (Mandatory)
Disconnect the battery negative terminal firstDisconnect the battery negative terminal (-) before service, secure the cable, and wait 5 minutes to prevent short circuit, burnt wiring or fire at the B+ terminal.
Vehicle supportPark on a flat, solid surface. Apply the parking brake; put automatic transmission in P and manual transmission in Neutral, chock the wheels. Support the vehicle with safety stands; never use only a jack.
Personal protectionWear insulated gloves and safety goggles. Open flames and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. Keep away from fuel lines, exhaust pipes and battery.
Tool countingCount tools before and after work to avoid leaving them in the engine compartment and causing mechanical damage.
1.2 Tool List
Socket set (12/13/14mm), long socket, ratchet wrench, torque wrench, multimeter, electrical tape, clean cloth, WD‑40, high‑temperature grease.
1.3 Starter and Mounting Position Inspection
New starter: Undamaged and undeformed housing; drive gear free of wear or broken teeth; armature rotates smoothly; solenoid switch in good condition; wiring terminals free of oxidation or burning.
Mounting position: Flat and clean flywheel housing surface; intact threaded holes; flywheel ring gear free of broken teeth or excessive wear.
Wiring harness: B+ main cable undamaged; control plug free of looseness or oxidation.
2. Removal of Old Starter
Mark wiring harnessMark the positions of the B+ power cable and 50 control plug, and take photos for reference.
Disconnect wiringUnplug the 50 control plug first → loosen the B+ terminal nut → remove and insulate the cable → disconnect the ground cable.
Remove fixing boltsThe starter is secured by 2 M12 bolts. Loosen the bolts diagonally in stages, support the starter (approx. 5–6kg) at all times to avoid dropping and damaging the ring gear.
Take out the starterPull out slowly, clean the mounting surface and threaded holes.
3. Installation of New Starter (Core Steps)
Step 1: Positioning and Pre‑Tightening
Push the starter smoothly into position, with the drive gear fully inserted into the flywheel housing spigot. The mounting surface must be fully seated.
Install the fixing bolts, turn 3–4 full turns by hand to confirm proper threads; do not fully tighten yet.
Step 2: Torque Tightening (Toyota Standard)
Starter fixing bolts: 40–45 N·mB+ power terminal: 15–18 N·mGround terminal: 8–10 N·m
Tighten in diagonal order in 2–3 stages. Do not over‑torque to avoid housing cracking.
Step 3: Electrical Connection (Strict Sequence)
Connect the ground cableInsert the 50 control plug and lock securelyInstall the B+ power cable, cover with insulating cap / tape after tightening; short circuit is strictly prohibitedRoute wiring away from high‑temperature and moving parts
Step 4: Lubrication and Meshing Inspection
Apply a small amount of high‑temperature grease to the drive gear and splines.Rotate the crankshaft manually 2–3 times, check smooth meshing without seizure or interference.
4. Power Restoration and Function Testing
Reconnect the battery negative terminal.Turn the ignition switch to ON; dashboard lights illuminate normally.
Start test:Starter runs smoothly, no abnormal noise / gear clashing / free spinning. Drive gear retracts immediately after starting; no grinding.
Voltage test:Voltage at cranking: ≥ 9.5VIdle charging voltage: 13.8–14.5V
Check for no looseness, overheating or unusual odors.
Installation Precautions for Toyota Fortuner 12V 2.2KW Starter (Detailed Professional Version)
For direct use in repair orders, export technical documents and customs documentation.
I. Safety Operation Precautions (Mandatory)
Must Disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal First
Disconnect the negative battery terminal (-) before removing or installing the starter, move the cable away and secure it. This prevents accidental grounding of the B+ constant-power terminal, sparks, burnt wiring, short circuit fire, or damage to the solenoid switch. After disconnection, wait 5 minutes to fully discharge residual voltage from the engine electronic control system.
Safe Vehicle Support
Park the vehicle on flat, solid, non-slip ground. Apply the parking brake firmly; put automatic transmission in P and manual transmission in N. Install wheel chocks front and rear.Support the vehicle securely with safety stands. Never work only with a jack to prevent vehicle slipping and injury.
Personal Protection and Worksite Safety
Wear insulated gloves and safety goggles during the entire operation to avoid electric shock, scratches, and burns.Open flames and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. Keep away from fuel lines, high-pressure oil pipes, high-temperature exhaust pipes, and the battery to prevent fire or explosion.
Tool Counting
Count all tools before and after the job. Do not leave sockets, wrenches, bolts, etc., in the engine compartment, near the transmission, or inside the flywheel housing, to avoid damaging the ring gear, housing, or drive shaft after startup.
II. Starter Matching and Inspection Precautions
Model Must Be Fully Identical
Applicable to: All Toyota Fortuner models with original-equipment starters.
Must confirm:
Voltage: 12V, Power: 2.2KW
Mounting spigot, hole spacing, and bolt size match the original
B+ power terminal and 50 control plug (position and shape) are fully identical
Do NOT use starters of different power, gear count, or model series; otherwise, gear clashing, poor meshing, free spinning, or ring gear burning will occur.
New Starter Must Be Inspected Item by Item
Housing free of cracks, deformation, or impact damage
Drive gear free of wear, broken teeth, or deformation
Armature rotates smoothly, no seizure, no abnormal noise
Solenoid switch free of looseness, damage, or burning
Wiring terminals free of oxidation, deformation, or looseness
Unqualified starters are prohibited from installation.
Flywheel and Ring Gear Inspection
Check that the flywheel ring gear has no broken teeth, excessive wear, abnormal chamfer, or misalignment.A damaged ring gear must be replaced; otherwise, it will damage the new starter drive gear.
Mounting Surface and Threaded Holes Requirement
The flywheel housing mounting surface must be flat, clean, free of oil, protrusions, or deformation.Threaded holes must be free of damaged threads, metal chips, or blockage. An uneven mounting surface will cause starter misalignment, poor meshing, abnormal noise, and premature bearing seizure.
III. Removal Precautions
Disconnect Power and Wiring First
Unplug the control plug first, then remove the B+ power cable and insulate it immediately. Do NOT remove mechanical bolts first.
Do Not Pull Wires
Grasp the plug body when unplugging; never pull the wire directly to avoid core breakage or poor connection.
Do Not Strike the Starter
Never strike the starter housing, gear, terminals, or solenoid with a hammer; internal coils, armature, and shift fork will be permanently damaged.
Loosen Bolts Diagonally in Stages
Avoid uneven stress that causes bracket deformation or thread damage.
Support the Starter Securely
The starter weighs approx. 5–6kg. Support it during removal to prevent dropping and damaging the flywheel ring gear, transmission housing, or causing injury.
IV. Installation Precautions
Accurate Positioning
Push the starter into place smoothly, with the drive gear fully seated into the flywheel housing spigot. The mounting surface must be fully flush and tight.
Do not install gaskets or force the starter; otherwise, it will cause improper gear meshing (too deep / too shallow), gear clashing, or abnormal noise.
Torque Tightening Requirement
Starter mounting bolts: 40–45 N·m
B+ terminal: 15–18 N·m
Ground terminal: 8–10 N·m
Excessive torque → bolt breakage, housing cracking, flywheel housing deformation
Insufficient torque → loosening, resonant noise, poor contact, arcing and overheating
Strict Electrical Connection Sequence
Correct order:
Connect the ground cable first
Plug in the 50 control plug
Connect the B+ main cable last
