Installation Method and Precautions for 12V 2.2kW Starter Motor Adapted to 4D56/4D56-T Engine (L200/L300 Models)
1. Tools and Consumables
2. Parts Inspection
(1) Starter Motor Body Inspection
(2) Original Vehicle Side Inspection (After Old Part Removal / Before New Part Installation)
3. Vehicle Safety Preparation
II. Standard Installation Steps
Step 1: Starter Motor Pre-assembly (Before Fitting)
Step 2: Starter Motor Positioning and Preliminary Fixation
III. Core Precautions (Divided into Mechanical/Circuit/Usage Categories, Top Priority)
(I) Mechanical Assembly Precautions
Absolutely flat mounting surface: Oil stains and residual glue on the joint surface between the cylinder block and the starter motor must be completely cleaned, and the gasket is strictly prohibited to be reused. Otherwise, it will cause air and oil leakage on the joint surface and even vibration and offset of the starter motor during operation;
Strictly no mixed use/replacement of bolts: Must use original factory high-strength fixing bolts special for 4D56/4D56-T, and no ordinary bolts are allowed to replace them. Otherwise, the vibration during engine operation will cause bolt fracture and starter motor falling off, leading to serious mechanical failures;
Centered gear meshing: It is strictly forbidden to forcibly pry the starter motor to align the holes during installation, otherwise it will cause skewed meshing between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear, resulting in "gear grinding" abnormal noise during operation and rapid wear of the ring gear and drive gear;
Thin coat of grease only: Excessive grease on the drive gear and spline parts will absorb oil stains and iron filings inside the engine, leading to gear slipping and jamming, while insufficient grease will aggravate wear.
(II) Circuit Wiring Precautions
Disconnect the battery negative terminal first and reset it last: Assembly with the battery connected is strictly prohibited during the whole process. Otherwise, the metal tool touching the starter motor terminal will cause battery short circuit, leading to burnout, sparks and even battery explosion;
Clear distinction of terminals: The thick positive cable must be connected to the large terminal (M terminal) and the thin control wire to the small terminal (S terminal). Reverse connection is strictly prohibited, otherwise it will directly burn out the starter motor solenoid switch and ignition switch;
Firm terminal crimping: If the wiring terminals are loose or oxidized, polish the oxide layer or replace the terminals first. Otherwise, the excessive contact resistance during operation will cause heating and burnout of the terminals and even wire harness fire;
Qualified battery voltage: The no-load voltage of the battery before assembly shall be ≥12.4V, and the load voltage (during starter motor operation) shall be ≥10.5V. Insufficient voltage will lead to weak starting and poor meshing of the starter motor, and long-term operation at low voltage will burn out the starter motor carbon brushes and rotor.

I. Sources of Core Technical Parameters and Specifications
Basic Engine and Vehicle Model Specifications
- The 4D56/4D56-T is a classic Mitsubishi 2.5L diesel engine, widely fitted to models such as the L200 (Triton) and L300 (Delica). Requirements for its starter motor mounting position, fixing bolt specifications and flywheel ring gear matching are all derived from Mitsubishi Original Factory Engine Service Manuals, including official service documents for the 4D56 series from 1994 onwards (document numbers including the 11B series, e.g., PWEE9067-A), as well as torque standard databases for model years such as the Triton 3 (1996-2006) (e.g., 4D56 engine parameters recorded in TightTorque).
Key Torque Values
- The specified torque values in this document—45-50N·m for the main starter motor fixing bolts, 20-25N·m for the positive terminal and 8-10N·m for the control wire terminal—are determined by combining the cylinder block thread strength of the 4D56 engine (M10 specification bolts), force-bearing requirements of the starter motor mounting bracket, and universal torque specifications for the automotive repair industry (e.g., standard bolt torque tables). These values are fully consistent with the torque range for engine accessory fixing bolts specified in Mitsubishi's original factory standards, and also reference the universal maintenance standards for diesel engine starter motor installation (e.g., starter system torque specifications compiled by automotive repair professional platforms).
Starter Motor Adaptation Parameters
- The clearly marked core parameters of 12V 2.2kW and 10 teeth are the standard matching specifications for the mainstream starter motors of this engine model (with part numbers such as M002T84071 and MD312857). These parameters are sourced from Mitsubishi's original factory parts catalogs and adaptation specification sheets of leading starter motor manufacturers (e.g., WAI, Unipoint), ensuring full compatibility of power, ring gear matching, and mounting hole dimensions (105mm hole center distance, 77mm flange diameter) with the 4D56/4D56-T engine.
II. Sources of Operating Procedures and Precautions
Universal Maintenance and Safety Specifications
- Requirements such as disconnecting the negative battery terminal before installation, distinguishing between the positive terminal (M terminal) and control wire terminal (S terminal) for wiring, strictly prohibiting forced prying of the starter motor, and applying a thin coat of grease are universal safety and assembly guidelines for automotive starter motor maintenance worldwide, applicable to all vehicle models. Combined with the characteristics of diesel engines (the 4D56 is a compression-ignition type) such as high starting current and strong vibration, enhanced requirements for bolt anti-loosening, wiring insulation, and water/oil proofing are added, which are consistent with the general chapters in diesel vehicle maintenance manuals.
