General Installation Method for Audi 12V Starter
I. Pre-installation Preparation
1. Tools and Accessories
Special tools: Socket wrenches (8/10/13/16mm), torque wrench (range 0-100N·m), flathead/cross screwdrivers, ratchet wrench, extension bars
Auxiliary accessories: Original factory starter mounting bushings (if applicable), lock washers, high-temperature resistant threadlocker (Loctite 243 recommended by Audi Original Factory, for fixing bolts only)
Protective tools: Insulated gloves, safety goggles, anti-slip mat (for placing disassembled parts)
2. Vehicle and Part Inspection
Keep the vehicle in flameout and power-off state, remove the negative battery terminal (to avoid short circuit; the negative terminal is black marked with "−"), and wait for 5 minutes to fully power off the vehicle's electronic control system.
Inspect the new starter: No jamming of stator/rotor, no oxidation of solenoid switch terminals, the drive gear (one-way clutch) rotates smoothly and rebounds normally.
Inspect the engine-side mounting surface: No deformation of flywheel housing connection holes, no thread slipping, no missing/worn teeth on the flywheel ring gear (replace the ring gear first if damaged, otherwise meshing abnormal noise will occur after starter installation).
Clean the mounting surface: Wipe off oil, dust and rust on the flywheel housing and starter contact surface with a dry cloth to avoid excessive gap after installation.
3. Pre-arrangement of Parts
II. Core Installation Steps (General Version)
Step 1: Starter Positioning and Preliminary Fixation
Attach the starter to the flywheel housing mounting surface, and accurately align the two main fixing bolt holes of the starter with the holes on the flywheel housing (most Audi starters are equipped with two main fixing bolts, and some high-torque models are equipped with three; the holes are symmetrically designed and cannot be reversed).
Insert the fixing bolts into the holes and screw them in 3-5 turns by hand for preliminary fixation (do not fully tighten), ensuring the starter can be slightly fine-tuned left and right to reserve a gap for subsequent alignment of the flywheel ring gear.
Step 2: Inspection of Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Gap
Push the drive gear of the starter solenoid switch by hand to extend it, and inspect the meshing gap between the gear and the flywheel ring gear with a standard value of 0.5-1.5mm.
If the gap is too large/too small, correct it by slightly prying the side of the starter to fine-tune the mounting position. Keep the starter free of looseness after the gap meets the standard.
Step 3: Tightening of Fixing Bolts (Strictly Comply with Torque Standard)
Symmetrical tightening (first stage): Tighten the two main bolts to 30N·m respectively to eliminate installation gaps.
Apply threadlocker (optional but recommended): Apply a thin layer of Loctite 243 to the bolt threads (only on the threads, not on the bolt heads).
Final tightening (second stage): Tighten the bolts to the original factory standard torque (45-55N·m for mainstream Audi models; specific values: 45N·m for A3/A4L, 50N·m for A6L/Q5L, 55N·m for Q7).
If there are locating pins/bushings, press the locating pins into the flywheel housing holes first, then tighten the fixing bolts to prevent the starter from shifting during operation.
Step 4: Wiring Connection (Anti-reverse Connection, Audi Exclusive Marking)
Thick terminal (B+): Marked with "30", connected to the positive battery power cable (red thick cable), matched with a large-size nut (13/16mm) with a tightening torque of 18-22N·m. Put on the insulating protective cover after tightening.
Thin terminal (S): Marked with "50", connected to the vehicle control cable (thin red/purple cable with plug), which is snap-in/small nut type. Tighten by hand first, then turn half a circle with a wrench; no excessive torque is needed (to prevent terminal thread slipping).
After wiring connection, pull the wires slightly to confirm no looseness, arrange the wires and fix them on the engine wiring harness clips to prevent the wires from contacting the engine high-temperature components (e.g., exhaust pipe) when the starter is working.
Step 5: Reset of Negative Battery Terminal
III. Post-installation Testing (Mandatory Steps)
Preliminary power-on test: Turn on the vehicle ignition switch (without starting), and check that there is no fault code on the instrument panel (clear the starter-related fault code with an OBD diagnostic tool if any).
Start-up test: Turn the ignition switch/press the start button; the starter should operate without abnormal noise and with smooth meshing, and the engine should start successfully at one time. The starter drive gear should rebound immediately without jamming after starting.
Idle inspection: When the engine is running at idle speed, touch the starter housing; no obvious vibration or abnormal noise is normal. Check that the wiring terminals have no heat generation (normal temperature when touched after 1-2 minutes of idle speed).
Multiple start-up verification: Start continuously for 3-5 times (10 seconds interval between each start-up), confirm that the starter works consistently every time without weakness, gear striking or jamming.

- Audi Original Factory Service Manual (ELSA 6.0)It contains core parameters for starter installation across all models, including mounting hole positions, fixing bolt torque values, terminal markings, and flywheel ring gear meshing clearance. It serves as the direct basis for the torque standards (e.g., 45N·m for A3/A4L, 50N·m for A6L/Q5L), terminal differentiation (30/B+, 50/S), and matching requirements for mild hybrid models stated in the content. This manual is the standard operating guideline for FAW-Volkswagen/Audi 4S stores.
- FAW-Volkswagen/Audi After-sales Technical SpecificationsIt clearly defines brand-specific requirements such as the use of one-time lock bolts, the adaptation of Loctite 243 threadlocker, and the symmetrical step-by-step bolt tightening procedure, and specifies installation details applicable to mainstream domestically-produced Audi models.
- Operation Manual for Audi Special Diagnostic System (ODIS)It standardizes the matching process after the integrated installation of the starter and BSG motor on 12V mild hybrid models, ensuring the normal operation of the electronic control system.
