Pre-installation Preparation
Prepare tools including a ratchet wrench, socket, torque wrench, screwdriver, jack, and safety stand. Also, have medium-strength thread locking adhesive ready, and confirm that the new generator matches the vehicle model.
Park the vehicle on a flat and safe surface, engage the handbrake, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool down to avoid burns from high-temperature components. Then use the jack and safety stand to lift the right side of the vehicle body, facilitating subsequent operations on the bolts under the generator.
Locate the car battery, disconnect the negative terminal to cut off power to the entire vehicle, preventing electric shock or short circuits during installation.
Install the New Generator
Place the new generator accurately back into the original installation position, insert the through bolt at the bottom, and screw on the nut without fully tightening it to reserve space for subsequent adjustments.
Install the positive wire of the generator, pay attention to the installation direction, and initially fasten the bolt by hand. Then reconnect the generator signal wire connector, ensuring it is fully locked and not loose.
Install the tensioner bolt with fixing and adjusting functions above the generator: first screw on the horizontal bolt, then snap the vertical bolt into the adjustment slot, and then slightly tighten the horizontal bolt.
Install the Belt and Adjust Tension
Install the engine belt onto the crankshaft pulley, water pump pulley, and generator pulley in sequence, ensuring the belt fits tightly into each pulley groove without misalignment.
Adjust the vertical bolt and press down the generator to regulate the belt tension. The standard is that the belt can be easily bent to approximately 90 degrees by hand. An overly loose belt may slip, while an overly tight one may damage the bearings.
Tighten All Bolts
Use a torque wrench to tighten all bolts to the specified torque: the upper fixing bolt and the nut for the lower through bolt should both be tightened to 23 Newton-meters, and the fixing nut for the positive wire should be tightened to 18 Newton-meters.
For some Nissan models with special requirements for bolt tightening order, follow the principle of initial tightening from bottom to top and final tightening from top to bottom. Ensure the surface of the generator pulley side fits the installation position as the reference plane before tightening.
Final Inspection
First, check if the generator is firmly installed and all wiring connections are correct. Confirm no tools or parts are left in the engine compartment, then lower the vehicle body.
Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery, start the engine, and observe the generator's operating status for any abnormal noise.
Test the generator's output voltage; under normal conditions, it should be between 13.5V and 14.5V. If the vehicle is equipped with an OBD scanner, connect it to the control system for simple initialization. Some models also require calibrating the battery management system to ensure the generator is compatible with the vehicle. Finally, confirm that no fault lights are illuminated on the instrument panel.
Safe Operation Points
Disconnect the battery's negative terminal throughout the entire process; live operation is prohibited. Avoid tools touching the positive and negative terminals during wiring to prevent short circuits.
Do not touch high-temperature components until the engine has fully cooled down. When lifting the vehicle body, it must be secured with a safety stand—relying solely on a jack is forbidden.
Avoid pulling wires or connectors during installation to prevent electrical failures caused by wire damage or loose pins.
Installation Accuracy Requirements
A torque wrench must be used for bolt tightening, strictly following the specified torque (23N・m for fixing bolts, 18N・m for positive wire nuts). This avoids vibration from loose bolts or thread damage from over-tightening.
The generator must fit closely to the reference surface without tilting or deviation. Ensure the generator pulley, crankshaft pulley, and water pump pulley are in the same plane to prevent belt uneven wear.
Follow the sequence of "initial positioning first, then belt adjustment, and final tightening last." Do not reverse the steps as this will affect installation accuracy.
Belt Adjustment Specifications
Strictly control the belt tension: press the middle of the belt by hand, and the deflection should be easily bent to approximately 90°, with an error not exceeding ±10%.
Ensure the belt is fully seated in the pulley grooves during installation, with no dislodgment or misalignment. Recheck the fit between the belt and each pulley after adjustment.
Do not use hard objects to pry the pulley for forced belt installation, as this may damage the belt teeth or bearings.
Electrical Connection and Subsequent Inspection
The positive wire and signal wire must be connected to the correct interfaces, and the connectors must be fully locked. A small amount of conductive paste can be applied to the positive wire connection to improve contact and avoid heat generation from poor contact.
After starting the engine, let it idle for 3-5 minutes. Listen for any abnormal noise from the generator and observe if the belt slips or deviates.
Voltage testing should be performed at both idle speed and medium speed to ensure it remains within the 13.5-14.5V range. If a fault light illuminates or voltage is abnormal, shut down the engine immediately to inspect wiring or installation issues.
