Installation Method for HOWO 28V Starter
Pre-installation Preparation (Safety & Materials)

Component Inspection
Installation Procedures (Perform in Sequence)
- Cleaning and PositioningClean the starter mounting surface on the engine block/transmission housing to remove oil stains and rust. Apply a thin layer of high-temperature resistant grease to the contact surface for easy positioning and to prevent jamming.
- Placement and Preliminary FasteningLift or support the starter into the mounting position and align the bolt holes. Insert the original fixing bolts with lock washers, and tighten them by hand to reserve torque adjustment space, ensuring no tilting.
- Torque FasteningTighten the bolts to the torque specified in HOWO’s original factory standards (typically 55–65N·m for main fixing bolts, subject to model-specific adjustments). Apply threadlocker to the bolt heads to prevent loosening, ensuring there is no wobble or resonance gap.
- Electrical Connection (Critical!)
Main Power Supply (B+): Connect the positive battery cable to the starter’s main terminal post, install an insulating gasket, and tighten the nut to a torque of 8–10N·m. Apply conductive paste to the terminal to prevent oxidation.
Control Wire (Solenoid Switch): Connect the control wire from the starter relay/ignition switch (usually red or brown) to the S terminal. Attach the ground wire to the grounding point on the starter housing or the engine block. Fit protective covers over the terminals after fastening.
Wiring Arrangement: Secure the wiring harness with cable ties, keeping it away from high-temperature components such as exhaust pipes and turbochargers, as well as moving belts, to prevent abrasion and burnout.
- Re-inspection and ResetConfirm that all bolts are tight, wiring connections are correct, and the harness has no interference with other components. Reconnect the negative battery cable and clean up the tools and work area.
Post-installation Testing and Commissioning
- No-load TestAfter power is connected, check that the solenoid switch engages with a crisp sound, the drive gear extends and retracts smoothly without jamming or abnormal noise. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the S terminal — it should be ≥22V during startup (for 24V systems).
- Vehicle-mounted Startup TestStart the engine and observe that the starter operates without abnormal vibration or noise, and the cranking speed is stable. Do not perform consecutive startups more than 3 times; allow an interval of ≥2 minutes between each attempt to avoid overheating.
- Charging System CheckAfter startup, let the engine idle for 3–5 minutes. The generator output voltage should be 28–30V, meeting the 28V charging standard.
Installation Precautions for HOWO 28V Starter
I. Pre-installation Safety Precautions
1. Power-off Protection
2. Status Confirmation
Ensure the engine is completely shut down and cooled to avoid scalding by high-temperature components. Cover rotating parts such as engine belts and fans to prevent accidental entanglement during operation.
Check that there is no oil stain or accumulated water around the starter mounting position. Clean rust and impurities from the mounting surface on the engine block/transmission housing to avoid affecting the fitting accuracy.
3. Component Verification
Verify that the starter OEM model is compatible with the engine type (e.g., model 3708010‑X2 suitable for Weichai WP10/WP12 series engines). Do not use incompatible models.
Inspect the starter body: No cracks on the housing, no chipped or missing teeth on the drive gear, smooth engagement of the solenoid switch when pressed, carbon brush wear not exceeding the original factory limit (usually ≤5mm), and no oxidation or corrosion on the terminal posts.
Confirm the completeness of accessories: Use only original factory fixing bolts, lock washers and insulating gaskets; non-standard parts are strictly prohibited.
II. Operational Precautions During Installation
1. Core Requirements for Mechanical Installation
Positioning and Fastening: The starter must fit completely flush with the engine flywheel housing during installation without tilting. Align the bolts with the holes accurately; do not force alignment by tapping to prevent housing deformation.
Torque Specifications: Tighten the main fixing bolts to the torque specified in the original factory standards (generally 55–65N·m). Apply Loctite 243 threadlocker to the bolt heads. After tightening, shake the starter to confirm there is no looseness or resonance gap.
Gear Lubrication: Apply a small amount of high-temperature lithium-based grease to the meshing surface of the drive gear and flywheel ring gear. Avoid over-greasing to prevent oil from being thrown into the combustion chamber.
2. Electrical Connection Prohibitions
Wiring Sequence: Complete mechanical fixing first before connecting electrical circuits; reverse the sequence during disassembly to prevent short circuits and sparking.
Terminal Connection:
Connect the positive battery cable to the starter’s B+ main terminal post, install an insulating gasket, and tighten the nut to a torque of 8–10N·m. Apply conductive paste to the terminal surface to prevent oxidation.
Connect the starter control wire to the S terminal. The ground wire must be reliably connected to the grounding point on the starter housing or the metal surface of the engine block. Loose connections or grounding on painted surfaces are strictly prohibited.
Wiring Arrangement: Secure the wiring harness with cable ties, keeping it at least 50mm away from high-temperature components such as exhaust pipes and turbochargers. Avoid contact with moving parts like belts and drive shafts to prevent harness abrasion and short circuits.
3. Prohibited Operations
Do not strike the starter housing, end caps or solenoid switch to avoid damaging internal components such as stator windings, rotor commutators and rectifier bridges.
Do not touch the drive gear by hand during installation to prevent finger pinching caused by gear rebound. Do not short-circuit the solenoid switch terminals for no-load testing to avoid burns from high current.

Claimed Basis vs. Actual Status
1. Sinotruk HOWO Original Factory Maintenance Manual (No.: HW76 Series Heavy-Duty Truck Starter Installation Specifications)
Nature: This is an identifier for internal/original factory technical documentation, used to anchor key parameters such as model compatibility, bolt torque, and terminal definitions. It is generally provided to authorized service stations and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) along with complete vehicles or spare parts, and its full text is not available for public download.
Verification and Access Methods: Provide your HOWO vehicle model year, engine model, or starter OEM number (e.g., 3708010‑X2), and I can help you verify the original factory torque values, bolt specifications, and mark the corresponding chapters in the manual. You can also submit the serial number via Sinotruk’s official after-sales channels to obtain the dedicated chapter on starter installation and commissioning.
2. QC/T 29064-2011 Technical Conditions for Automotive Starters
Nature: There is an error in the standard number. The currently valid automotive industry standard is QC/T 731-2005 Technical Conditions for Automotive Starters, which replaces the old version QC/T 29064-1992. This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, and inspection rules for automotive starters, serving as the compliance basis for safe operation and performance evaluation.
