Component Inspection
Removal of the Old Alternator (Perform in Sequence)
Disconnect the negative battery cable, record the positions of the alternator plug, B+ terminal and ground wire, and take photos for future reference.
Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the drive belt. If it is an automatic tensioner, compress it with a special tool and lock it in place before removing the belt.
Disconnect the nut of the B+ terminal (ensure proper insulation), unplug the excitation/sensor plug, and remove the ground wire.
Unscrew the alternator fixing bolts (usually 2 main bolts; mark their length and position for reference), and take out the old alternator.
Clean oil stains and rust from the mounting surface, bracket and bolt holes, and check if the bracket is deformed.
Installation of the New Alternator (Perform in Sequence)
- Cleaning and PositioningClean the mounting surface on the engine block/bracket to remove oil stains and rust. Apply a thin layer of high-temperature resistant grease to the contact surface for easy positioning and to prevent jamming.
- Placement and Preliminary FasteningLift or support the new alternator into the mounting position and align the bolt holes. Insert the original fixing bolts with lock washers, and tighten them by hand to reserve torque adjustment space, ensuring no tilting.
- Torque FasteningTighten the bolts to the torque specified in Geely's original factory standards (typically 35–45N·m for main fixing bolts, subject to model-specific adjustments). Apply threadlocker to the bolt heads to prevent loosening, ensuring there is no wobble or resonance gap.
- Electrical Connection (Critical!)
Main Power Supply (B+): Connect the positive battery cable to the alternator's B+ main terminal post, install an insulating gasket, and tighten the nut to a torque of 8–10N·m. Apply conductive paste to the terminal to prevent oxidation.
Control Wire (Excitation/Sensor): Align the wiring harness plug with the alternator socket until a "click" sound is heard to confirm it is locked in place. Connect the ground wire to the grounding point on the alternator housing or the metal surface of the engine block. Avoid loose connections or grounding on painted surfaces.
Wiring Arrangement: Secure the wiring harness with cable ties, keeping it away from high-temperature components such as exhaust pipes and turbochargers to prevent abrasion and burnout.
- Belt Installation and Tensioning
Install the belt onto the pulleys according to the belt routing diagram, ensuring the routing direction is correct and the belt fits properly in the pulley grooves without misalignment or twisting.
Release the belt tensioner lock to allow it to tension automatically. Press the middle section of the belt by hand; the deflection should be approximately 10–15mm (or follow the value specified in the vehicle manual). Start the engine at idle speed and check for no slippage or abnormal noise.
Reset and Testing
- Re-inspectionConfirm that all bolts are tight, wiring connections are correct, the harness has no interference with other components, and the belt routing is proper.
- Power ResetReconnect the negative battery cable.
- Idle Speed TestStart the engine and let it run at idle speed for 3–5 minutes. Observe that the alternator operates without abnormal vibration or noise. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the B+ terminal; the normal voltage for a 12V system is 13.8–14.5V, which should remain stable when the load changes.
- Load TestTurn on electrical devices such as headlights, air conditioning and windshield wipers. The voltage should remain within the range of 13.5–14.7V without significant fluctuations. Check that the belt has no slippage and the tensioner works properly.
- Road TestDuring driving, observe that the charging indicator light on the instrument panel turns off and no warning lights are illuminated, indicating normal power generation.
Installation Precautions for Geely 12V Alternator
I. Pre-installation Safety Precautions
1. Power-off Protection
2. Status Confirmation
Ensure the engine is completely shut down and cooled to room temperature to avoid scalding from high-temperature components. Cover rotating parts such as engine belts and fans to prevent clothes or tools from being entangled during operation.
Clean oil stains, accumulated water and rust around the alternator mounting bracket and bolt holes. Check whether the bracket is deformed or cracked. Deformed brackets must be corrected or replaced first; otherwise, it will cause the alternator to be installed askew and the belt to run off-track.
3. Component Verification
Verify that the OEM model of the new alternator matches the vehicle model and engine assembly (e.g., the alternator model suitable for JLγ-4G15 engine). Do not mix alternators of different vehicle models or power ratings.
Inspect the new alternator body: the housing shall be free of cracks, the bearings shall rotate smoothly without looseness or abnormal noise, the rectifier bridge and voltage regulator shall be intact, the terminal posts shall be free of oxidation and corrosion, and the pulley runout shall comply with the original factory standard (≤0.5mm).
Confirm the completeness of accessories: use only original factory fixing bolts, lock washers and insulating gaskets. It is recommended to replace the drive belt and tensioner synchronously to avoid new alternator failures caused by worn old parts.

Stated Basis and Actual Status
1. Geely Original Factory Maintenance Manual (Special Chapters for Corresponding Models)
Nature: This is internal/original factory technical documentation, used to anchor key parameters such as model compatibility, bolt torque, and terminal definitions. It is generally provided to authorized service stations and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) along with complete vehicles or spare parts, and its full text is not available for public download.
Verification and Acquisition Methods: Provide your Geely vehicle model year, engine model, or alternator OEM number, and I can help you verify the original factory torque values, bolt specifications, and mark the corresponding chapters in the manual. You can also submit the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)/serial number via Geely’s official after-sales channels to obtain the dedicated chapter on alternator installation and commissioning.
2. QC/T 729-2017 Technical Conditions for Automotive Alternators (Error Correction)
Currently Valid Standard: The correct active standard is QC/T 729-2005 Technical Conditions for Automotive Alternators, which specifies the technical requirements, test methods, and inspection rules for automotive alternators. It serves as the compliance basis for safe operation and performance evaluation.
Acquisition Methods: The official text can be purchased or consulted through the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Standard Platform, China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, or Standards Press of China.
