Pre-installation Preparation
Safety and Tool Preparation: Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the handbrake. Prepare tools including wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, and rags. Removing Shielding Components: For some models, additional parts must be removed to expose the alternator. For example, the Ford Focus requires removing the right half-shaft, the center support bracket secured by 3 bolts, and the accessory drive splash shield fixed by 2 screws. If the alternator is blocked by upper and lower air ducts, release the clips and remove the duct components.
Removal of the Old Alternator
Removing the Drive Belt: Rotate the front accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise. Once the belt tension is released, remove the belt from the alternator pulley and remember the belt routing to avoid errors during subsequent installation.
Disconnecting Electrical Wiring: First, unplug the alternator’s electrical connector. Then move aside the terminal protective cover and loosen the fixing nut of the alternator’s B+ terminal. Handle the terminal gently when separating it to prevent tearing surrounding wires.
Removing the Old Alternator: Sequentially loosen the alternator’s fixing bolts, nuts, and positioning studs. For some models, remove the bottom bolts of the alternator first before taking out the entire unit. After removing the old alternator, clean dust and oil from the installation area with a rag.
Installation of the New Alternator
Securing the Alternator Unit: If the upper air duct of the alternator was removed earlier, reinstall it and tighten the fixing bolts to 12 N·m. Place the new alternator in the installation position and initially secure it with hand-tightened bolts. Next, install the positioning stud and tighten it to 24 N·m, then tighten the alternator nut to 47 N·m, and finally fasten the alternator fixing bolts to 47 N·m to ensure the unit is stable without wobbling.
Restoring Electrical Wiring and Belt: Reinstall the alternator’s B+ terminal, tighten the fixing nut to 17 N·m, and cover the protective shield. Reconnect the electrical connector firmly. Then fit the drive belt onto the pulleys according to the original routing and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to achieve moderate belt tension—avoid slipping due to looseness or bearing wear due to excessive tightness.
Resetting Peripheral Components: Sequentially reinstall the accessory drive splash shield and center support bracket, tightening the bracket bolts to 30 N·m. If the right half-shaft was removed earlier, install it in accordance with the vehicle’s maintenance specifications. Finally, reinstall all previously removed shielding components one by one.
Commissioning and Testing
System Initialization Matching: For some new Ford models, connect an OBD diagnostic tool to the vehicle. Access the vehicle control system, locate the "Alternator Settings" option, enter the new alternator parameters, and calibrate the BMS module to ensure the system correctly identifies the battery and charging status.
Power-on Operation Test: Reconnect the negative battery terminal, start the engine, and use a voltmeter to measure the alternator output voltage (normal range: 13.5–14.5V). Simultaneously, observe whether the charging warning light on the instrument panel turns off—no illuminated fault lights indicate initial qualification.
Rechecking Operating Status: Run the vehicle for approximately 10 minutes. Inspect the alternator for abnormal heating or noise, ensure the drive belt has no misalignment or slipping, confirm all fixing bolts are secure, and check that surrounding pipelines are free of leaks to verify a successful installation.
Safe Operation Specifications
Parallel Power Disconnection and Protection: The negative battery terminal must be disconnected before installation. For older Ford models equipped with fans, use tape to secure the fan blades to prevent scratches during operation. If the power will be disconnected for a long time, it is recommended to use a memory saver to back up on-board system data to avoid parameter loss. Keep away from high-temperature components in the engine compartment during operation to prevent scalding.
Avoid Damage to Wiring and Pipelines: Press the clip gently when disconnecting the alternator wiring connector, and apply moderate force when loosening the positive cable nut to avoid tearing surrounding wires. When moving shielding components around the engine, never disassemble pipelines or open fluid circuits to prevent fluid leakage and system contamination.
Accessory Compatibility Requirements
Prioritize Matching Original Factory Accessories: The new alternator must be fully compatible with the Ford model’s engine type and year. Prioritize original factory or authorized accessories, as these have stronger compatibility and reliability, and can avoid electrical system failures caused by mismatched accessories. Meanwhile, use supporting components for fasteners such as bolts and washers; thread lock can be used if necessary to prevent bolt loosening.
Inspect Associated Components in Advance: After removing the old alternator, inspect the drive belt status synchronously. If wear, cracks, tooth loss, or other issues are found, replace it in a timely manner. If the belt length does not match the new alternator, replace it with a belt of the corresponding specification to avoid transmission failure.
Installation Precision Control
Compliance with Fixed Torque and Belt Tension: When fixing the alternator, tighten the bolts to the standard torque specified in the Ford maintenance manual. After installing the drive belt, adjust the tension to maintain an approximate 1/2-inch movement range—avoid abnormal noise and slipping due to excessive looseness, or accelerated wear of the water pump and alternator bearings due to excessive tightness. Some models require a belt deflection of 1–1.5 inches, with specific values subject to the vehicle manual.
Error-Free Wiring Specifications: Wiring must correspond to the alternator terminal markings. For example, connect the charging cable to the terminal marked "BAT", and the charging cable must pass through the ammeter and fuse in sequence, not through the switch interface. Never reverse the positive and negative wires. After tightening the terminals, check that the insulation layer is intact to prevent short circuits that burn out electrical appliances. In addition, the grounding wire must be securely connected to ensure smooth grounding between the alternator housing and the vehicle body.
