Installation Method of Truck Clutch Disc
I. Pre-installation Preparation
Tool Preparation
Special tools: Clutch centering tool (used to calibrate the coaxiality of the clutch disc, flywheel and pressure plate), torque wrench, special puller for pressure plate disassembly and assembly (required for some models).
General tools: Socket wrench, screwdriver, crowbar, copper hammer (to avoid damaging components), cleaning cloth.
Component Inspection and Cleaning
Inspect the clutch disc: The friction surface shall be free of oil stains, cracks and uneven wear; the spline teeth shall be free of deformation and rust; the damping springs shall be free of looseness or breakage.
Inspect the flywheel and pressure plate: The working surface of the flywheel shall be flat without ablation or grooves; the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate shall have uniform elasticity, and the release fingers shall be free of wear.
Cleaning treatment: Wipe the surfaces of the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disc with a cleaning agent to remove oil stains and iron filings; apply a small amount of high-temperature grease to the spline parts (to avoid slippage of the clutch disc due to excessive grease).
Accessory Preparation
II. Specific Installation Steps
Flywheel Positioning and Cleaning
Confirm that the flywheel has been firmly installed on the engine crankshaft, and recheck the flywheel bolts according to the original factory torque (usually 80–120 N·m, refer to the vehicle manual for specific values).
Wipe the friction working surface of the flywheel with a dry cloth to ensure no impurities remain.
Preliminary Positioning of the Clutch Disc
Insert the clutch centering tool into the spline hole of the clutch disc to play a temporary positioning role.
Identify the front and reverse sides of the clutch disc:
Most truck clutch discs are marked, with the side labeled "FLYWHEEL SIDE" or "FRONT" facing the flywheel.
If there is no mark, the side with the thicker friction plate or the side where the damping springs protrude less shall face the flywheel. Reversing the installation is strictly prohibited, otherwise it will lead to incomplete clutch disengagement, difficulty in shifting gears.
Place the positioned clutch disc steadily in the center of the flywheel, ensuring that the other end of the centering tool fits the spline hole of the crankshaft.
Pressure Plate Installation and Fixation
Align the clutch pressure plate with the clutch disc, match the bolt holes of the pressure plate with those of the flywheel, and make the release fingers of the pressure plate face the gearbox side.
Tighten the pressure plate fixing bolts crosswise and symmetrically: Tighten them gradually in 3–4 steps, with an initial torque of 20–30 N·m, and finally tighten them to the original factory standard torque (usually 40–60 N·m). Cross tightening can avoid pressure plate deformation and ensure uniform force on the clutch disc.
After tightening, rotate the centering tool slowly to confirm that the clutch disc rotates smoothly without jamming, then pull out the centering tool.
Release Bearing and Release Fork Installation
Apply a small amount of high-temperature grease to the release bearing, sleeve it on the guide sleeve of the gearbox input shaft, and ensure that the bearing rotates flexibly.
Install the clutch release fork, check the contact clearance between the release fork and the release bearing, and ensure that the release fork swings smoothly without jamming.
Gearbox Docking
Lift the gearbox, align the input shaft with the spline hole of the clutch disc, and push the gearbox in slowly. Avoid excessive force during the process to prevent displacement of the clutch disc.
After the gearbox is in place, tighten the connecting bolts between the gearbox and the engine according to the original factory torque.
Reset of Auxiliary Components
Install the clutch cable (mechanical type) or hydraulic oil pipe (hydraulic type), and bleed the air from the hydraulic system (required for hydraulic clutches).
Check the free travel of the clutch pedal and adjust it to the standard range according to the vehicle manual (usually 15–30 mm).

Precautions for Installation of Truck Clutch Disc
- Strictly Distinguish Installation DirectionThe front and reverse sides of the clutch disc must be distinguished according to the marks. The side marked "FLYWHEEL SIDE", "Flywheel Side" or "FRONT" shall face the engine flywheel. If there is no mark, the side with the thicker friction plate or the deeper recessed damping springs shall face the flywheel. Reversed installation will directly lead to incomplete clutch disengagement, difficulty in gear shifting, and even burnout of the friction plate.
- Ensure Installation Surfaces Are Clean and Free of Oil StainsBefore installation, wipe the friction surfaces of the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disc with a special cleaning agent to completely remove oil stains, iron filings and dust. Do not touch the friction surfaces with oil-stained gloves during the entire process. Apply a small amount of grease to the spline parts; excessive grease will be thrown onto the friction surfaces and cause slippage.
- Accurate Centering Is a Core RequirementA clutch centering tool must be used (the gearbox input shaft can be used as a temporary substitute if no special tool is available) to ensure the coaxiality of the clutch disc spline with the crankshaft and gearbox input shaft. Poor centering will make it impossible to install the gearbox input shaft smoothly, or cause uneven wear and jitter of the clutch disc.
- Bolt Tightening Must Follow SpecificationsThe pressure plate fixing bolts shall be tightened gradually in 3–4 steps in a cross and symmetrical manner to avoid deformation of the pressure plate. The final torque must be strictly implemented in accordance with the original factory manual of the vehicle model (usually 40–60 N·m). Recheck the torque of the flywheel bolts (80–120 N·m), and avoid under-tightening or over-tightening.It Is Recommended to Replace Wear Parts as a Complete SetThe clutch disc is a wear part. When replacing it, the pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing and release fork bushing should be replaced at the same time. Matching old components with a new clutch disc will lead to uneven force distribution and shorten the service life of the new component.
