General Installation Method for Clutch Discs of Toyota/Daihatsu Models
I. Pre-installation Preparation
1. Cleaning Components
2. Inspecting Component Condition
3. Distinguishing Component Orientation
II. Specific Installation Steps
1. Positioning the Clutch Disc
2. Tightening the Pressure Plate Bolts
3. Removing the Centering Tool
4. Installing the Transmission Assembly
Key Precautions for Clutch Disc Installation of Toyota/Daihatsu Models
Strictly Prohibit Reverse Installation
The side marked "FLYWHEEL SIDE" must face the flywheel, and the side marked "TRANSMISSION SIDE" must face the transmission. If there is no marking, the side with protruding damping springs should face the transmission, and the side with thicker friction linings should face the flywheel.
Friction Surfaces Must Be Kept Free of Oil Contamination
Before installation, thoroughly clean oil stains and iron filings off the friction surfaces of the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disc with anhydrous ethanol or a dedicated cleaner. During installation, do not touch the friction surfaces with gloves contaminated by engine oil.
Bolt Tightening Must Follow Cross-Symmetric and Stepwise Force Application
Tighten the pressure plate bolts in a cross-symmetric sequence (e.g., 1-3-5-2-4-6) in 2–3 passes. The final torque must strictly comply with the original factory specifications (18–25 N·m for most models).
Lubrication Is Restricted to Specific Parts Only
Only a small amount of high-temperature grease is allowed to be applied to the splines of the transmission input shaft, the guide sleeve of the release bearing, and the fulcrum of the release fork. Under no circumstances should any lubricant be applied to the clutch friction surfaces, pressure plate surfaces, or flywheel end faces.
It Is Recommended to Replace Components as a Complete Set
Replace the clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing simultaneously to avoid uneven engagement, abnormal noise and shortened service life caused by mismatched wear levels between new and old components.
Centering Tool Is Indispensable
Use a dedicated clutch centering tool during installation (a transmission input shaft can be used as an alternative if the tool is unavailable) to ensure the clutch disc is fully concentric with the flywheel.

| No. | Core Points of Precautions | Core Sources | Source Explanations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prohibition of reverse installation (distinction by markings / judgment without markings) | Toyota Original Factory Maintenance Manuals (e.g., for Yaris, Camry, etc.), Daihatsu 4WD Model Maintenance Manuals | The manuals clearly specify that the side marked "FLYWHEEL SIDE" shall face the flywheel, and the side with protruding damping springs shall face the transmission. Reverse installation will cause disengagement faults. |
| 2 | Strict prohibition of oil contamination on friction surfaces | CLUTCH Chapter of Toyota Maintenance Manuals, Technical Specification for Automobile Clutch System Maintenance (GB/T 5372-2019) | The original factory requires cleaning friction surfaces with anhydrous ethanol. The GB standard stipulates that oil contamination will cause slippage, and no lubricants shall come into contact with friction surfaces. |
| 3 | Cross-symmetric and stepwise tightening of pressure plate bolts | Toyota Crown/Corolla Maintenance Manuals, Daihatsu Clutch Maintenance Specifications | The manuals require tightening bolts in the sequence of 1-3-5-2-4-6 in 2–3 passes with a torque of 18–25 N·m to prevent pressure plate deformation. |
| 4 | Lubrication restricted to specific parts only | Toyota SST Tool Operation Instructions, Daihatsu Clutch Lubrication Specifications | Only a small amount of high-temperature grease may be applied to transmission input shaft splines and release bearing guide sleeves; lubrication on friction surfaces/pressure plate surfaces is prohibited. |
| 5 | Recommended replacement of components as a complete set | Toyota Technician Training Manuals, General Specifications of the Automobile Maintenance Industry | Mismatched wear levels between new and old components may easily cause abnormal noise/shaking. The original factory recommends replacing the clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing simultaneously. |
| 6 | Mandatory use of centering tools | Toyota SST Special Tool Manuals (e.g., 09301-00230), Daihatsu Clutch Installation Specifications | The manuals mandate the use of centering tools (or transmission input shafts as alternatives) to ensure concentricity between the clutch disc and flywheel, avoiding uneven wear. |
| 7 | Test run inspection after installation | Troubleshooting Chapter of Toyota/Daihatsu Model Maintenance Manuals | The manuals require test runs to check for vehicle shaking during starting, smoothness of gear shifting, and slippage during sudden acceleration, which serves as a verification process for installation issues. |
| 8 | Marking relative positions before disassembly | Toyota/Daihatsu Transmission Disassembly Specifications, General Operation Guidelines of the Automobile Maintenance Industry | Marking the relative positions of the flywheel and pressure plate and aligning them during reassembly reduces the risk of pressure plate deformation, which is a standard operation in original factory maintenance. |
Supplementary Notes
Priority of Original Factory Manuals: For specific parameters of different models (e.g., torque values, flywheel end face runout standards), refer to the original factory maintenance manuals of the corresponding models. General specifications are for reference only.
National Standard Basis: GB/T 5372-2019 specifies general requirements for cleanliness and component fitting accuracy during clutch installation, applicable to all domestic and imported models sold in China.
Special Tool Verification: The Toyota SST (Special Service Tool) centering tool (e.g., 09333-00013) is a core tool for ensuring installation accuracy, and its irreplaceability is clearly stated in the manuals.
